Anti-Bullying Resources

ANTI-BULLYING STRATEGIES 

SHMS does not tolerate bullying behavior in any form. Students are advised and encouraged to report bullying as soon as possible to a responsible adult. Bullying behaviors are aggressive and involve an imbalance of power and repetition.

When someone says or does something unintentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s rude. When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s mean. When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and keeps doing it, even if told to stop, that is bullying. Being rude, mean, or a bully does not align with our expectations for our students at SHMS. Complaints and reports of bullying are investigated by the administration and carry disciplinary consequences as established in our D5 Code of Conduct and Board Policy JICFAA.

Some of the ways we coach our students on how to create an anti-bullying climate include:

  • Teaching students where bullying might occur and how it might happen, including types such as physical, verbal, emotional, or in the context of a cyber/digital environment.
  • Discussing the impact of bullying on everyone involved in the situation.
  • Encouraging students to be upstanders 
  • Providing strategies to appropriately intervene or report such as StopIt.
  • Offering support from school counselors, social workers, or other appropriate staff.
  • Delivering digital citizenship lessons.
  • Recognizing positive and appropriate behaviors that contribute to a positive climate.
  • Utilizing SmartPass.

Please encourage your student to report bullying immediately, as our goal is that every student feels safe, supported, and that they belong at Spring Hill Middle School.
